Taken
from Orongo, the southern part of the island,
this photograph shows the edge of the crater
around the volcanic cone, Rano Kau. This
area is known as Vai Atare and is
where the legendary founder of the island,
Hotu Matu'a was supposed to have lived.
Here can be found petroglyphs, simple house
foundations, earth ovens and ahu (raised
stone platforms used for worship). The
photograph was taken looking east towards
mainland Chile, 2,300 miles away.
