Rano Kau is a volcanic cone located on the southern tip of Easter Island. The
crater is about five thousand feet in diameter and is ringed by steep, rock
walls with the exception of a section which was knocked out, revealing the ocean
beyond. The water in the center of the crater is visible though openings in
the mats of floating vegetation. On one side of Rano Kau is located the ‘Orongo
complex which was central to the Birdman competitions.
