Moai on Mars

The volcanic soil around the inside of the crater of Rano Raraku has a reddish hue, causing explorers to comment that it looked like a Martian landscape. The photograph shows one of the moai standing inside of the crater and looking southwards. It has been hypothesized that it would be unlikely that moai such as this one would be lowered down into the crater if they were destined to be later moved to ahu and therefore they were probably intended for the crater.
