The photograph was taken from Rano Raraku, the quarry from which the maoi were
carved, looking north-west toward the volcanic cone of Maungra Terevaka. The
kneeling moai in the foreground is know as Tukuturi. McLaughlin writes that
the kneeling moai represents the position assumed by ceremonial singers and
is reminiscent of stone carvings elsewhere in Polynesia. It is the only kneeling
moai ever found on the island.
