Easter Island

Tukuturi

The photograph was taken from Rano Raraku, the quarry from which the maoi were carved, looking north-west toward the volcanic cone of Maungra Terevaka. The kneeling moai in the foreground is know as Tukuturi. McLaughlin writes that the kneeling moai represents the position assumed by ceremonial singers and is reminiscent of stone carvings elsewhere in Polynesia. It is the only kneeling moai ever found on the island.
