I had arrived in Venice that morning via train from Vicena as part of a month long backpacking trip in August 2003. I was spending the afternoon by exploring Venice and had taken a water ferry across the Grand Canal from Santa Maria della Salute to Palazzo Guistinian. As we were walking off the dock when I saw the empty, red seat of the approaching gondola and walked back to the end of the dock to take the photograph.
